City of the Tsar Peter the Great

Saint Petersburg is without doubt the most beautiful Russian city and it has much to offer.  The design of the houses, canals and streets of Russia's European style city was designed by Italian architects, who received instructions from the tsar to build the Venice or Amsterdam of the north.
The good results are clearly visible and during summer time it is possible to take boat trips to appreciate the views of the wonderful golden cupolas and pastel colour buildings from the 18th and 19th century. The river Neva runs through the city centre, and it is an absolute treat to walk along the river with its great views and its splendid bridges. In the city there are countless churches, cathedrals, gardens, palaces and museums worth seeing. The world-famous Hermitage Museum houses 10.000 of objects of art and is probably reason enough to visit St. Petersburg. The Mariinskiy Theatre offers world-class concerts and ballet performances and in the outskirts of the city lie the impressive summer residences of the tsars.  St Petersburg has many hotels but not so many with great atmosphere. The Alexander House a former mansion with 19 rooms and full of character is an exception to the rule.
