Wandering through Lisbon

The beautiful Portuguese capital is located at the mouth of the river Tagus.  It is both a melancholic and a vibrant city with many interesting sites, museums and historic buildings. Bairro Alto, Lapa and Chiado are the exotic names of the most beautiful districts where the Portuguese people like to come  at night to enjoy a delicious fish casserole and a glass of  Vinho Verde. The city can be discovered by foot, but it is also possible to buy a ticket at the nostalgic ‘tram eléctrico’. The district of Alfama relates to the time when the Moors were settled here and built Castelo Sao Jorge, strategically  located offering a wonderful view over the city. The combination of city and beach makes Lisbon an irresistible option and it is worth to consider a day trip  to Cascais, a former fishing village with beautiful beaches.  An excellent place to stay would be The York House, originally a 17th century monastery.  This historic hotel dates from 1880 and is situated between Lapa and  the Tagus, at 2 km from the city centre. The hotel has, over the years, welcomed many famous writers such as Marguerite Duras, Graham Greene and John Le Carré.  Its a two-storey building with a total of 32 rooms with A/C, tv and 24 hour room service.
