Surprising Tunisia

The village of Sidi Bou Saïd is situated on a hill overlooking the Sea of Tunis and dates from the 11th century. It preserves a very unique architecture, thanks to Baron d'Erlanger. He ensured that in 1915 a conservation committee was established in order to mantain the old traditional buildings of the Andalusian-style town. The white and blue colours attract nowadays artists and visitors from all over the world. They enjoy a glass of mint tea at one of the terraces or just wander through the cobbled streets with unexpected views over lush gardens and old houses.

Sidi Bou Saïd is close to Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, and you should not miss the opportunity to visit the Bardo Museum in Tunis, housed in a 17th-century Ottoman palace. The building is in itself a good reason to visit – the interiors have some wonderfully decorative ceilings and ornate stucco work. The museum contains the most amazingly Roman mosaic collection you will ever see. The objects provide an intriguing document of Roman life – featuring food, sports, entertainments and gods.

You are also very near the Roman ruins of Carthage and a visit to this ancient place is a true archaeological sensation and a must.  During the reign of Emperor Augustus Carthage was a Roman settlement and the capital of the Roman province of Africa. In the second century AD it reached with 300.000 inhabitants even the status of the third city in the Roman Empire, after Rome and Antioch.

Our favourite hotel is to be found in one of the historic houses in the old city of Sidi Bou Saïd.  Dar Saïd is a charming boutique hotel where traditional atmosphere and modern comfort go together wonderfully. The 24 rooms are all simple but nice and each room is differently decorated. There are three patios with fountains and flowering plants and there is a good choice of quiet spots to sit around. Near the pool are deck chairs with white cushions overlooking the sea. The hotel has its own 12m long sailing yacht for rent and nearby you will find a golf course.
