Program
Day 1. Amsterdam - Delhi
Depart by KLM from Schiphol Airport to Delhi and transfer to hotel.
Day 2. Delhi: City Tour
Visit New and Old Delhi by private car with driver and guide.
The vibrant capital of India is a city of 14 million people and nowhere in the country is the contrast between old and new more obvious. Delhi is two cities in one. The Old Delhi of the Mughals is still a medieval district of narrow lanes, forts, mosques and bazaars. New Delhi is built by the British between 1911-1931 and is a spacious and well-designed metropolis of broad avenues, grand imperial buildings and landscaped gardens. Delhi has fantastic shopping opportunities ranging from the excellent Central Cottage Industries Emporium and the traditional bazaars of Chandni Chowk to the colourful shops in the markets of South Delhi.
Day 3. Delhi - Agra
A train trip of 2 hours will bring you to Agra to visit the Taj Mahal, the most beautiful and romantic building in the world and the main attraction of India. Built by the emperor Shah Jehan for his favorite wife Mumtaz, its perfect proportions and exquisite craftsmanship took 20.000 workers almost 22 years to complete in 1653.
Day 4. Agra - Ranthambore
Today is a six hour drive to Ranthambore including a one hour stop to visit Fatehpur Sikri, the deserted red sandstone city. Ranthambore National Park (400 km2) was originally the private hunting ground of the Maharajas of Jaipur and was declared a National Park in 1973. The park derives its name from the huge 1000 year old Rajput fortress which sits on a rocky outcrop 215 m high in the forest and is fascinating to visit in its own right. The Park is famous for its tigers, although sightings are always a matter of luck and perseverance.
Day 5. Ranthambore National Park
Today there is a jeep safari on the program and with a little luck tigers, leopards and antelopes can be spotted. The times of the game drives depend on the park opening times and the restricted vehicle allocation is determined on a daily basis by the Park authorities. You may be allocated either an open top canter (coach) seating 20 or possibly a jeep seating 6 people. Safaris last approximately 3 hours.
Day 6. Ranthambore - Amber - Jaipur
On the road to Jaipur is the Amber Fort and the journey by elephant to this fort on the top of a hill is a very special experience.
Day 7. Jaipur
The City of Victory was founded in 1727 and is a well-planned city of magnificent palaces and buildings. Built from rose-colored terra cotta, it is called 'Pink City'. Nowadays the Capital of Rajasthan with a population of over 1 million is a city full of contrasts with bazaars teeming with turbaned elders and jeaned youngsters with camels, horses and a multitude of vehicles. Jaipur’s focal point is the magnificent Hawa Mahal, otherwise known as the Palace of the Winds; primarily an elaborate five-storey face with projecting windows and balconies, behind which the ladies of the court used to sit and observe life going on in the streets below.
Day 8. Jaipur - Jodhpur
Dominated by the spectacular Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur city is a mass of sky-blue colored cubed houses in a desert setting. The city was founded in 1459 and the kingdom of Marwar flourished due to its strategic location on the trade route between Delhi and the Middle East. Sandalwood, dates, copper, cattle, camels and salt passed through the city over the centuries. Overnight at Rohet.
Day 9. Jodhpur - Udaipur
Drive to Udaipur (5 hours) and en-route visiting the temples of Ranakpur, hidden in the dense forests of the Aravalli hills. Regarded by many as the most romantic city in India, Udaipur is an enchanting image of white marble palaces, placid blue lakes and green hills. It is an oasis of colour in a stark and arid region. The city is dominated by the massive City Palace overlooking Lake Pichola with its white island palaces.
Day 10. Udaipur
Picturesque havelis, ghats and temples along the lake front, the lively bazaars of the old city and a relaxing atmosphere make Udaipur perfect for wandering around.
