Program
Day 1. Departure Amsterdam
KLM flight from Amsterdam to Bangkok.
Day 2. Bangkok
Arrival Bangkok, transfer to hotel in Bangkok and day at leisure.
Day 3. Bangkok - Chiang Rai
Transfer to airport for flight to Chiang Rai; transfer to the Imperial Golden Triangle Resort & Spa.
Day 4. Chiang Khong - Luang Say Cruise
Transfer to the pier in Chiang Khong, where the boat departs to Laos at 09:00 hrs for a cruise down the Mekong to Laos. En route one stop is made to observe rural life along the Mekong and discover minorities, a buffet lunch on board. Arrive at Pakbeng before sunset and check-in at LuangSay Lodge. Dinner on the terrace, overlooking the Mekong River.
Day 5. Pakseng – Luang Prabang
Full breakfast at lodge. (Optional: walk to Pakbeng market, where people from the surrounding villages exchange their goods). At 08:30 hrs. board the boat for the second leg of the cruise. A short stop to discover a Hmong village before having buffet lunch on board. Continue to Pak-Ou village at the mouth of the Nam Ou River, visit Tam Ting “Caves of a thousand Buddhas”. On the way to Luang Prabang a brief stop is made to observe the traditional process of obtaining local rice alcohol. Arrival before sunset and transfer to hotel.
Day 6 & 7. Luang Prabang
The crown jewel of Laos and former Lanexang is perhaps the best-preserved traditional city in South East Asia. Magical and charming, it has preserved its long-standing reputation as a stronghold of Lao culture with its splendid natural scenery and sense of timelessness. In 1995 UNESCO voted Luang Prabang as a World Heritage City.
Day 8. Luang Prabang - Vientiane
Transfer to airport and flight to Vientiane, the capital of Laos. The major attractions are the serene Buddhist monasteries that dominate the centre of town. The city has kept its timeless charm with tree-lined avenues, brightly painted temples and quaint French architecture. Overnight in Vientiane.
Day 9. Vientiane - Phnom Penh
Flight to the capital of Cambodia and transfer to hotel.
Day 10. Phnom Penh
At leisure in the capital of Cambodia, where the lovely city centre can be easily explored. You can visit the Victory Monument, and the National Museum, also called Musée des Beaux-Arts. A French archaeologist and painter, Georges Groslier, designed it in Khmer style in 1917. The museum contains a collection of Khmer art - notably sculptures - throughout the ages. The Royal Palace, built by King Norodom in 1866, is in the centre of Phnom Penh. Here you will find the Silver Pagoda, so named because of its floor, which is made up of 5000 silver tiles.
Day 11. Phnom Penh - Siem Reap
In the morning transfer to the airport for domestic flight to Siem Reap, a pretty village with an attractive centre and a large selection of fine hotels with lovely gardens and swimming pools.
Day 12 & 13. Siem Reap
Free to visit at your own pace the most famous of all the temples on the plain of Angkor: Angkor Wat. The temple complex covers 81 hectares and is comparable in size to the Imperial Palace in Beijing. It has five towers and this 12th century masterpiece is considered by art historians to be the prime example of classical Khmer art and architecture. Visit the South Gate, the ancient capital of Angkor Thom (12th century), Bayon temple (unique for its 54 towers decorated with over 200 smiling faces of Avolokitesvara), the Elephants Terrace and the Terrace of the Leper King. Sunset at Angkor Wat. There is a choice in transportation to Angkor: by bikes, motorbike taxi or car with driver and guide.
Day 14. Siem Reap - Bangkok - Amsterdam
Transfer to the airport to return via Bangkok to Amsterdam.
Day 15. Amsterdam
Arrival at Schiphol.
Cambodia is also an excellent beach destination and Sihanoukville would be a good choice for a beach extension. The town is overlooking the Gulf of Thailand has a long white sandy beach and shady palm trees.
