Suriname: Dutch heritage & pristine rainforest

The former Dutch colony Suriname is already more than 30 years independent, but still feels very much connected with the Netherlands. The capital Paramaribo has a lovely position on the banks of the broad Surinam River and the waterfront is a pleasant place for a drink.
The many historic buildings in the centre recall the days of glory of Paramaribo. Nowadays the colonial houses are gradually restored and refurbished and UNESCO has voted Paramaribo as a World Heritage City. The hinterland of Suriname is very pure and unspoilt. an ideal place for spotting birds and animals. A visit to the hinterland can only be made by boat or plane as there is no road infrastructure. Once you arrive at your eco-lodge, there are wonderful nature walks and boat trips through the tropical jungle waiting for you.
The melting pot of cultures has made Suriname also a culinary destination and the warm hospitality and sunny character of the Suriname people make you feel very welcome.

Program

Day 1. Amsterdam - Paramaribo
A KLM flight to Paramaribo and transfer to hotel Tora Rica, located on the Surinam River, with lovely garden with swimming pool and tennis courts.

Day 2 & 3. Paramaribo
It is wonderful to walk or bike through the old city centre along the historic buildings.  A recommendable excursion is the boat trip to Frederick Village, a former plantation on the right bank of the river Commewijne.

Day 4. Hinterland
Today you will fly with a small aircraft to Kabalebo Lodge situated along the river, with its  own runway and surrounded by pristine jungle. 

Day 5 & 6. Kabalebo Lodge
This is paradise for nature lovers. The lodge is surrounded by overwhelming nature and lies at the foot of the Misty Mountains. There is a large variety of birds and game to see, such as deer, pingo’s and pakira's, capibara's, tapirs and wild cats, including jaguars. Together with your private guide you will make trekkings and boattrips to mountains and waterfalls.

Day 7. Kabalebo - Paramaribo - Bergendal
Flight to Paramaribo and transfer to Bergendal, a former sugar plantation from 1870, located 86 km south of Paramaribo. The resort covers about 2500 hectares of secondary forest and here you will find the new eco-resort of Suriname.

Day 8. Bergendal
The resort Bergendal is situated on a wide river in a beautiful, tropical area full of palm trees and orchids. In the main building there is a restaurant and several lounges. There are a total of 45 rooms in small lodges, equipped with all modern conveniences and a pool. There is a lot to do: mountain biking, horseback riding, rivercruises, bird watching, walking and
trips to the Jewish Savanna, Bownsberg or Brokopondo Lake.

Day 9. Bergendal - Amsterdam
Full day at leisure in Bergendal and at the end of the afternoon transfer to the international airport (35 km) for the evening flight back to Amsterdam.

Day 10. Amsterdam
Arrival at Schiphol.

It is also possible to extend this trip with a cruise on the Mi Gudu, a boat with only 6 comfortable cabins which follows the backwaters of Suriname. See Alternatively you can make a stop at Curaçao, one of the Dutch Antilles Islands.
