Program:
This wonderful 20-days fly & drive safari combines the best of northern and southern Namibia: including the stunning sights of the Fish River Canyon, Namib Desert and game viewing in Etosha National Park. You will drive through the most beautiful scenery that Namibia has to offer, resulting in a really great and varied trip.
Day 1. Amsterdam - Johannesburg
By KLM from Amsterdam to Johannesburg and overnight in a hotel near the airport.
Day 2. Johannesburg - Windhoek
Morning flight from Johannesburg to Windhoek and collect rental car. Windhoek is a melting pot of cultures with a large variety of architecture and people, which gives the city a special atmosphere.
Day 3. Windhoek - Kalahari Desert (Mariental)
Departure to the Kalahari desert, with endless plains full of locusts on the horizon and colourful sand dunes. This is the area of the Bushmen, with ancient habits and customs.
Day 4. Kalahari Desert - Hope Keetman
The journey continues to Keetmanhope, the largest city in the south, en route a visit to the 'Quiver Tree Forest’ and the impressive massive boulders from the Giant's Playground.
Day 5. Keetman Hope - Fish River Canyon
The Fish River Canyon is, after the Grand Canyon in the United States, the biggest canyon in the world. Over a distance of 160 km, 550 meters deep and 27 km wide, the Fish River carved a canyon through the rocks of the Kalahari Desert over millions of years.
Day 6. Fish River Canyon
A whole day to explore the area. There are lovely walks to be made.
Day 7. Fish River Canyon - Aus
On the way to Aus, famous for the wide variety of desert landscapes, like the granite mountains and vast desert plains, with the wild horses of the Namib.
Day 8. Aus: Kolmaskop & Lüderitz
Today opportunity to explore the surroundings. Kolmaskop is a derelict ghost town in the middle of the sands, created by the diamond industry. Lüderitz is the first German settlement in Namibia and has hardly changed over the years. You can visit a ‘Konditorei’ and a historical museum.
Day 9. Aus - Sossusvlei Area
Continue to the north across the Namib Desert with its high dunes and large variety of ecosystems. It has a breathtaking beauty with vast plains, deserted beaches and deep canyons.
Day 10. Sossusvlei
Today visit to the sand dunes and Sossusvlei, with the famous walking dunes. At sunrise, the highest sand dunes in the world offer a wonderful spectacle. Not far away is the 30-meter deep Sesriem Canyon in the Tsauchab river.
Day 11. Sossusvlei - Swakopmund
Through the Kuiseb-pass, the Namib Naukluft Park and the town of Walvis Bay to Swakopmund at the coast. The salty waters of the lagoon are the natural habitat of flamingos and pelicans and a beautiful place to watch at sunset.
Day 12. Swakopmund
This German-like town has wide boulevards with palm trees and large parks and offers plenty of opportunities: a museum, the Seawater aquarium, a beach, scenic flights, a ride on a quad-bike through the dunes, boat trips and kayaking.
Day 13. Swakopmund - Damaraland (Twijfelfontein)
Along the Atlantic Ocean via Henties Bay to Cape Cross, with one of the largest colonies of seals in the southern hemisphere. About 80,000 to100,000 seals live here.
Day 14. Damaraland
Twijfelfontein is famous for its historical rock paintings: there are about 1500 drawings of the Bushmen found. Also worth a visit are the ‘Organ Pipes' (a geological formation) and ‘Burnt Mountain'.
Day 15. Damaraland - Petrified Forest
Two hundred million years ago, the trees were slowly petrified and nowadays the wood structure is still evident. With a local guide you can visit the area.
Day 16. Petrified Forest - Etosha National Park
The Etosha National Park is home to a large variety of African wildlife and many birds. The park consists of huge salt plains with large herds of elephants, giraffes, rhinos, zebras, ostriches and kudus. They share the huge park with predators such as lions, leopards and cheetahs.
Day 17 & 18. Etosha National Park
Visit the park, it has about 114 different species of mammals. In particular, lions, elephants and giraffes are present here in great numbers. Especially the waterholes are frequently visited.
Day 19. Etosha National Park - Windhoek
Return to Windhoek for the last overnight.
Day 20. Windhoek - Johannesburg - Amsterdam
Delivery of the rental car at the airport of Windhoek to connect flight via Johannesburg to Amsterdam.
