Chill out in Kiruna

In Swedish Lapland, 200 km north of the Arctic Circle and 12 km from Kiruna Airport, the village of Jukkasjárvi is situated next to the Torne River. From the crystal clear river water each year the largest and most unique Ice Hotel in the world is built. What once began as an igloo has become the famous Icehotel, which rises on the white horizon from mid November and in spring slowly disappears. With the borrowed water from the Torne a team of carefully selected ice sculptors create each year a brand-new hotel with rooms and suites. Despite the fact that the hotel is made from ice and snow, it offers all the luxury and comforts of an ordinary hotel. There are several hotel rooms, luxury suites and chalets and you have the choice of ice or warm rooms. Furthermore, there is a sauna, an ice cinema, an ice bar and ice restaurant, but also a 'warm' restaurant. There also exists the possibility to get married in the ice chapel. The annual exhibition of ice sculptures has a special theme each year. In 2008, the Icehotel was voted by Swedish touroperators the 'Best experience in Sweden’. It offers unique activities such as excursions with a snow mobile – including sharing knowledge about the Saami, the original population of Lapland - a moose safari or a trip by dogsled. There is also the possibility of learning how to make ice sculptures. Seeing the northern light is an experience in itself and for many visitors of the Icehotel an important reason to come. It is a unique phenomenon that is visible almost every winter, when the sky is clear.
