Laos & Cambodja

This journey to Indochina starts with a two-day boat trip on the Mekong River from Thailand to Laos. The cruise will end in Luang Prabang, the cultural capital of Laos and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Laos is a mountainous country and home to many colorful hill tribes. The breathtakingly beautiful vast temple complex of Angkor and the Holy City of the Khmers are located in Cambodia. This cultural tour ends in Phnom Penh located on the river and with it’s many beautiful buildings that recall the French colonial era.

Day 1: Departure Amsterdam
Flight by KLM from Amsterdam to Bangkok, Thailand.

Day 2: Bangkok – Chiang Rai
Arrival Bangkok, and continuing flight to Chiang Rai. Overnight in Lanjia Lodge

Day 3:  Lanjia Lodge
The ecolodge is built in traditional Hmong style and offers hiking, cycling, batik courses. It is also possible to go bird watching.

Day 4: Chiang Khong – Luang Say Cruise
Early this morning a transfer to the pier in Chiang Khong, from where the boat will leave for Laos. A unique two-day boat trip will take you over the mysterious Mekong River to Luang Prabang. The boat will arrive just before sunset, in Pakbeng, where your dinner and overnight on the Mekong River will be in the beautiful Luang Say Lodge.

Day 5: Pakseng
There is the possibility of an early morning walk to a nearby market. Then the boattrip will continue peacefully on to Luang Prabang which you will reach late in the afternoon. A stop will be made at Pak Ou, a special cave on the river banks, where hundreds of Buddha statues are to be found. Disembark in Luang Prabang and transfer to La Residence Phou Vao for overnight.

Day 6 &7: Luang Prabang
The most beautiful city in Laos, rightly so, is now on the UNESCO World Heritage List. There are dozens of temples to be found amidst the beautiful natural surroundings, and it is remarkable that the temple roofing continuing down to the ground. In the museum palace of the former king of Laos, the Phra Bang, stands the holiest and biggest golden Buddha statue in the country. Two full days to explore the colonial villas and oriental atmosphere found here.

Day 8: Luang Prabang – Vientiane
Flight to Vientiane, the capital of Laos. A city tour includes a visit to the oldest temple in the country, as well as a former convent, that now serves as a museum. Overnight in Vientiane.

Day 9: Vientiane – Phnom Penh
Flight to the capital of Cambodia. Phnom Penh is separated by a palm tree lined promenade, from a tributary of the Mekong. Along the promenade, overlooking the water, you will find French colonial buildings that are now a great choice for restaurants and cafes with terraces. The loveliest hotel in the city is The Raffels Hotel.

Day 10: Phnom Penh
Phnom Penh can largely be explored on foot and individually. The Archeological Museum, the art treasures of the temple complex Angkor Wat, the spectacular Royal Palace and the large covered Russian market are especially worth visiting.

Day 11: Phnom Penh – Siem Reap
In the morning a transfer to the airport for the flight to Siem Reap, a pleasant town with an attractive centre and a large selection of beautiful hotels with lovely gardens and swimming pools such as Residence D’Angkor

Day 12 & 13: Siem Reap
The visit to Angkor will take time and there is a range of wide choices:  either by car with a driver / guide, a motorbike taxi or a rental bike. In a beautiful jungle setting of about 400 km2, there are more than a hundred impressive temples to be found, some of which are in good condition and some of which are now in ruins. Between the temples there are beautiful basins with water lilies.

Day 14: Siem Reap – Bangkok – Amsterdam
Transfer to airport for return via Bangkok to Amsterdam

Day 15: Amsterdam

Arrival at Schiphol.

For the overnight stays there is a choice of standard, mid-range or luxury hotels. Cambodia also has great beaches which is not so well known in the rest of the world. For example, Sihanoukville, on the Thai Gulf, has a long white sandy beach and where the small hotels are mostly located between the palm trees. The best hotel found here is the Song Saa Resort located on an island just off the coast. A nice overnight accommodation along the coast is the 4 Rivers Floating Lodge.
